A Twitter war has broken out over DJ/producer David Guetta’s latest release “This One’s for You.” DJ Snake and Diplo, collaborators on Major Lazer’s hit EDM anthem “Lean On,” took to social media to attack Guetta for creating what Snake calls a “fake” and “horrible” version of their popular dance track.
We reported last November that Major Lazer’s “Lean On” had achieved monumental status as the most-streamed track worldwide on Spotify ever. The song has become an iconic modern-day EDM anthem that has spawned countless remixes and remains a top club track to this day. Created by producer Diplo’s Major Lazer project in collaboration with DJ Snake, the song’s signature chipmunk-style vocal refrain is instantly recognizable to pop music fans everywhere.
This week, however, Diplo and DJ Snake recognized their own hit in the new music of another top DJ/producer, David Guetta. Guetta, of course, is one of the world’s most popular DJs and dance music producers, and has collaborated with some of today’s biggest pop stars, including Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Usher, to name a few.
Guetta just released his latest track, “This One’s for You” as the theme song to European soccer championship Euro 2016. “Lean On” creators Snake and Diplo found the music just a little too familiar, and both took to Twitter to express their disdain.
DJ Snake, in a series of since-deleted tweets, called Guetta’s track “horrible” and a “fake ‘Lean On,'” adding, “you used to be a boss David.”
Diplo then chimed in to agree with Snake, adding, “I hope the kids realize that we always try to innovate and its easy for @davidguetta to do whatever in a quest for relevance … U can’t rip us off and go unnoticed, it’s a small community here.” Diplo continued to accuse Guetta of “straight jack(ing)” their song, which, to date, has over 1.3 billion YouTube plays.
While “This One’s for You” doesn’t necessarily sound like a complete ripoff of “Lean On,” the songs do share many similarities. Listen to how similar the opening notes of each track sound, for example. In addition, production elements never before used by Guetta are present, supporting the assertion that he is jumping on a bandwagon of modern production trends rather than following his own direction.
On the other hand, pop music production invariably influences the music that follows it, especially in the world of EDM. Diplo and Snake weren’t the first to create some of the production elements they use in “Lean On” and accuse Guetta of “jacking.”
The two songs can be compared below. Do you think their criticism is fair? Let us know in the comments section.
